Rios Lagartos, San Felipe, and Las Coloradas

Coloured lakes

Up on the Yucatan coast, some 42 kilometres from the town of Tizimin, lies the sleepy town of Rios Lagartos, translated as alligator river.

Part of a nature reserve, the town is located on a famous lagoon which boasts the largest density of flamingos in the whole of Mexico. In fact, this area has been officially recognised as an IBA (Important Bird Area) making it an ideal place to go birdwatching.

In the same municipality, you can find a small fishing port with its virgin beaches, Las Coloradas, famous for its extensive salt plains. Now a declared natural wildlife reserve, this once historically important town is becoming more and more popular as a place to see in the Yucatan Peninsular.
